On May 20, 2018, hearts stopped as Burno Mars introduced Janet Jackson before she blessed the 2018 Billboard Music Awards’ stage. A video displayed Jackson’s journey over the years but Jackson had to show the world she still at it even at the age of 52. Janet Jackson, Ms. Jackson if ya nasty, performed a jaw dropping medley of “Nasty,” “If,” and “Throb.” Jackson’s outfit was a sequins sweater dress with matching over-the-knee sneaker boots. The performance outfit was made for the numerous dance routines slayed by Jackson and her diverse backup dancers. Her outfit featured lace, belts, nude fishnets and finished with tribal-inspired bracelets and necklaces. The color balance of the gold and tribal colors shine throughout the whole iconic performance. After Jackson’s performance, she accepted the Icon Award. This made Janet the eighth person to accept the award and first Black Woman. Before Jackson could accept her award, the crowd chanted her name, “Janet! Janet! Janet!” Upon the crowd calming down, Janet Jackson took the BMA’s to CHURCH!
“ I’m deeply humbled and grateful for this award. I believe that for all the challenges, for all our challenges, we live at a glorious moment in history,” Jackson said. “It’s a moment when at long last women have made it clear that we will no longer be controlled, manipulated or abused. I stand with those women and with those men equally outraged by discrimination who support us in heart and mind.”
“ I stand with those women and with those men equally outraged by discrimination who support us in heart and mind.”
She continued as the crowd clapped: “This is also a moment when our public discourse is loud and harsh. My prayer is that, weary of such noise, we turn back to the source of all calmness. That source — that source is God. Everything we lack, God has in abundance, compassion, sensitivity, patience and a boundless love. So again, I want to thank all of you for this honor, and I thank God for giving me the precious energy that lets me live my life as an artist who every single day seeks to expand my capacity to love.” As I watched Jackson deliver her speech, all I could do is scream “Amen” and “Preach!” Janet Jackson reminded us what an Icon Living looks, perform, and speaks like. She was the highlight of the night and one of our top performances!
